Witch people, like magicians and sorcerers, conjurers, druids and hoodoo hexers, like cunning women and cunning men, kadaicha, shaman, manitou, angakok, curandera, bruxa, enchanters and shapechangers are needed in this world. They are the stories not bound by dogma or displayed as relics in a museum. They cause disquiet. They summon questions but it's not their way to give answers. They take us to the wild and the frightening places. The cave entrance under the ice at the base of that crevasse. Blue handprints on the rock face imprinted with an ochre of confusion. By people we cannot name and from a time we cannot confirm. Once Upon a Time people. People of the reindeer. Volcano people. Ancestors still riding our bones and our dreams. Teaching us a wilder, more honorable way of birthing, healing, loving, living and dying.

Ly's quest for authenticity is based in a lifetime of study and the breaking through of western society's demand for uniformity and conformity. A challenge of depth that can be confronting, but also revolutionary and revelationary.

Ly is on a quest to re-wild language - word witchery – as a storyteller. She expresses herself through a variety of forms: as a widely published international author, as a stage and film director, as an international tarot reader and an events organiser. She continues to publish, both books and papers, she's a foodie and she facilitates a coven called Wildwood Gate, established in Byron Bay in the 90's (de Angeles' says facilitates because she is anarchistic and does not agree to hierarchical and exploitative anything). It went global after Witchcraft Theory and Practice was released in America in the year 2000 and, as a result of social media, is now a worldwide cyber collective.

De Angeles is a scholar, heretic, animist and mystic. She is outspoken, with strong opinions, and is an indigenous Brigantach/Catuvellauna woman (Celtic see Priteni) with three offspring and five grandchildren.

The majority of her fictional work is mythic lore, both of the seeming mist-shrouded past and the so-called far-flung future. Most work is written in the present tense. De Angeles moved from Byron Bay to Melbourne in 2012 for post graduate work in the arts at Deakin University and was accepted into a Masters program. Her memoir, Initiation | a Memoir was published in 2016.

In her own words...

I grew up by the coast in Sydney, Australia, lost amongst the rocky cliffs between Balmoral Beach and Chinaman's Cove.

I became a book addict very young. All through my twenties I wrote, read tarot and did numerology; studied both my life's path, witchcraft, and everything Celtic. Well everything I could get my hands on really.

Me then.

I met anthropologist and author, Nevill Drury, during a stint at what was then Harper and Row and he was, apart from a very good friend, responsible for the publication, years later, of my first two books The Way of the Goddess in 1987 and The Way of Merlyn, 1990.

By the age of thirty two I had three children and lived off the grid in the highlands of Victoria with my coven.

In 1991, aged thirty nine I moved to Byron Bay. Bunjalung Country of the Arakwal People. I was reading and teaching tarot and within a year had formed another coven. I studied Hapkido, Aikido and Iaido. I also worked free weights at the gym and wrote Body Language, a handbook on nutrition and body-building.

1992 - I also began organising events and productions, beginning with The Wild and Wise Women's Festival.

1996 - I worked with two others on a Celtic festival called Wearing of the Green Day.

It was a pays, profits day. A chance for the community to come together without having to think about the cost. Live bands from morning till night, food everywhere.

We had a street parade and over 3,000 people joined in.

Nobody documentary

We are in post-production of a documentary called Nobodythat explores the fine line between mysticism and madness that many people walk, and that many fall from, a big problem in our shire, a chance to seek solutions amongst a massive representation of the local community after just one too many suicides and drug-related deaths.

Turns out, because of a keen and dedicated genealogist, my family (and possibly yours) is related directly to one of the key players in this remarkable true story.

2016 - the end of a five year journey writing a memoir.

Oh, and because I gave up grains and sugar in 2014. I'm fit. See my Almost Paleo blog.

2017 - Self published my latest book The Skellig

What am I passionate about? The art of clear communication, history, mythology, the legends of Irish and Celtic ancestry, debating with strong-willed, good-humoured people, all the wild things and all the wild places, the sea, the sea, the sea, and a sense of humour. I'm known to be rather outspoken on matters pertaining to the sustainability and guardianship of earth and the rights of all species to self-determination and I prefer the company of animals to most people.

Also in 2017 I am compiling a collection of lore (stories), learnings and grimoir entries for a 2018 release titled WITCH, Stories for Those Who Are. Introduction is here. The eBooks for The Quickening and The Shining Isle are now available, in preparation for the completion of the third in this, the Traveler Series, The Summer Country (2018).

Newest project is crazy crow publishing and distribution with a 2018 short story competition opening in February 2018 for all of you who fit the criteria.
